While I’m on about birth control, a recent article on MSNBC reports that France, a traditionally Catholic country, is pissed at the pope.
France “expresses its very strong concern about the consequences of the statements by Benedict XVI,” French Foreign Ministry spokesman Eric Chevallier said.
Furthermore,
“While it is not up to us to pass judgment on the doctrine of the Church, we consider that these statements endanger public health policies and the imperative to protect human life,” Chevallier told an online briefing Wednesday.
This is all well and good, and I commend the French minister for speaking up, especially when it’s in opposition to a grossly inaccurate statement by someone with as much political clout as the Popenfuehrer. I do worry a little bit about the American backlash. I mean, hell. If the French are behind something, about 85% of rural Americans will be against it just as a matter of principle.
I am somewhat concerned that there are some rather… bizarre comments coming from other French ministers. Apparently, conservative Christine Boutin takes a more laissez faire attitude. ”You are not going to expect the pope to say you must wear a condom,” says the practicing Catholic who has spoken out against progressive social policies in the past. ”It is not fun to put on a condom when you make love.”
I can’t even think of what to say about that. It’s just… incredible.
