The Catholic Church in Rome made the extraordinary admission yesterday that it is aware priests from at least 23 countries have been sexually abusing nuns. (LINK)
Extraordinary? Really?
We’re surprised that heterosexual males sworn to celibacy do underhanded things to get laid on the sly? We’re really acting like we’re surprised by this?
Most of the abuse has occurred in Africa, where priests vowed to celibacy, who previously sought out prostitutes, have preyed on nuns to avoid contracting the Aids virus.
Well slap me with a trout and call me Tom Thumb! I’d have never guessed that men in positions of authority would exploit the system to their advantage while blindly turning away from the real suffering of those below them.
Heaven forbid they do something productive like start a testing and free condom service for poor prostitutes. (No… I mean heaven forbid it. That was a statement of fact, not a snarky aside.)
In extreme instances, the priests had made nuns pregnant and then encouraged them to have abortions.
Color them hypocritical. But then, we already knew this, didn’t we?
Can we just admit that this whole celibate priest thing was a really, really bad idea, and that maybe Paul of Tarsus was just as superstitious and scientifically ignorant as everyone else in his little corner of history, and that he didn’t have the psychological acumen to justify his recommendation of celibacy?

No shit?
