Political Religious Insanity

I don’t often get into politics, but this is just too insane to leave unmentioned.

The house has passed a measure eliminating funding for Planned Parenthood, but NASCAR still has their big vroom vroom, sponsored with your tax dollars, racing around a track in circles.

It’s enough to make me lose hope.  I really don’t know what to say about this.  It’s sort of like arguing with a creationist.  At some point, you just have to throw up your hands and admit that we live in two different universes.  In some bizarro universe where it’s OK to give contraceptives to horses but not humans, it’s also better to keep a racecar running than to give necessary HIV/STD screenings to poor women with literally nowhere else to go.

And you know what makes it worse?  Planned Parenthood was already prohibited from funding abortions.

Planned Parenthood is already prevented by federal law from using federal dollars for abortion services. The amendment takes away the money they use to provide for family planning, birth control, medical and preventive services.  (LINK)

Rep. Jackie Speier, D-Calif, had this to say:

“Now you may not like Planned Parenthood, so be it. There’s many on our side of the aisle that don’t like Halliburton. And Halliburton is responsible for extortion, for bribery, for 10 cases of misconduct in the federal database, for a $7 billion sole-source contract. But do you see us over here filing amendments to wipe out funding for Halliburton? No, because frankly that would be irresponsible.

This is yet another case of religious ideology leading directly to societal insanity.  Yes, this measure still has to pass the House, and there are still plenty of ways to defeat it, but let’s not be cavalier:  An entire branch of our government is controlled by zealots intent on setting women’s rights back a hundred years for the sake of a right wing religious agenda.

It’s insanity.  Pure insanity.
