New Survey Finds: Biology Teachers are Spineless

The National Survey of High School Biology Teachers gives us a chilling glimpse into what has become of our schools.  Only 28 percent of biology teachers are presenting students with a full and accurate description of evolution.  Only 28 percent are telling students the most basic and fundamental fact of biology — that evolution is the unifying foundation of all the life sciences.  Even more disturbing, a staggering 13% teach creationism in defiance of numerous federal court decisions.

This is nothing short of a national, state, and local scandal.  In 2005, a judge ordered the removal of stickers warning students not to take evolution as established fact from textbooks in Cobb County.  Also in 2005, a judge in Dover, Pennsylvania ruled that “the religious nature of ID [intelligent design] would be readily apparent to an objective observer, adult or child,” and that it is “nothing less than the progeny of creationism… and not a scientific theory.”

Despite the clear and consistent judicial message that creationism is religion, not science, efforts continue. Today, there is a group in Atlanta whose express purpose is to reintroduce intelligent design into schools through subversive methods.  Among the “distribution ideas” presented to members of the “Atlanta Creation Group”:  “Purchase bulk [creation media] and give to a creationist student to hand out in public school.”

This is not a matter to take lightly.  In very clear terms, this group’s purpose is to disobey the law.  They are intent on defying the clear mandate that has been upheld since 1967. They are displaying their sense of morality for all to see.  Separation of church and state is disgusting to them.  The Constitution is abhorrent to them.  The only thing that is important is the propagation of their religious mythology.  They will subvert, cheat, and obfuscate to attain their goals, with or without the law on their side.  They are liars for their god.

  1. Can’t they just teach ID at Sunday School and leave it at that?

  2. Hamby,
Perhaps its because the real empirical evidence provided by the science community (and more specifically the bioinformatics scientists) several years ago, reflects evolutionary processes that are not random mechanics, but highly technical decision making communication systems. Obviously, that is totally different then what is in the students Biology textbooks and what is preached by Dawkins and company. The fact that Darwinists such as Dawkins, and Coyne are dragging Atheists down with them is selfish to say the least.

    You dont believe me?

For example, Go to wikipedia and type in “Junk DNA” and be amazed as you are redirected to an updated site to learn how “junk DNA is now known to have important biological functions”, and how the “The term is currently, however, an outdated concept”…

There are currently millions of Atheists that need to be re-educated to the new emprical evidence findings of the 21st century evolutionary science…

    I intend to post citations…

  3. I have to ask where are the “liberal” churches in all this. They aren’t trying very hard to defend evolution. I’ve never heard of anyone angrily yelling at a school-board meeting “The Bible tells us how to go to heaven, not how the heavens go!!!”

  4. Loren, the liberals are where they’ve always been. Doing nothing.

  5. Actually Loren, The key defender of evolution during the Dover trials was Catholic Ken Miller.

Just ignoring the moderate christians doesn’t mean they aren’t doing anything.

  6. This situation is yet another example of the contempt zealous Christians have for the rule of law. When they lose an issue in court they simply ignore the ruling. It is forbidden to teach creationism and the rulings on this issue go back to the monkey trial. The law is clear.
